Future Project Ideas

  1. Critical Theory Lenses

    1. Essential Question: How can we start using theoretical lenses (feminist theory, critical race theory, post colonial theory, queer theory, etc) to view texts and larger societal issues affecting us? (something like this)

    2. Key Products: An essay and/or presentation about a source text and how it can be read/interpreted using a theoretical lens; an interdisciplinary project that uses the theory discussed in class to analyze an issue that is a focus of another class.

    3. Key Learning Goals: Students will be able to recognize theoretical discourse; be able to identify key arguments of specific theories; be able to use the theories as a lens to analyze text; be able to use theories to analyze larger systemic issues

    4. Standards: not sure yet

    5. Anchor Texts: TBD

    6. Incorporation of cultural sustaining and/or critical pedagogy: Yes

  2. Grammar Workshop

    1. Essential Question: How can we best use SWE grammar and distinct dialects in ways that allow for success and personal voices to be heard and celebrated?

    2. Key Products: Not sure. I think it would be cool to have students write something that fully exemplifies how both SWE and distinct dialects differ and can be used in different ways to make the result even more powerful. Maybe even focus on code switching within the same project?

    3. Key Learning Goals: Students will be able to recognize key factors in SWE grammar and know how to write with proper academic grammar; students will be able to understand the importance of using different dialects for different purposes to greater effect; students will be able to recognize the systemic biases for SWE and against non-SWE in academic and formal settings (something like this–working on wording)

    4. Standards: not sure yet

    5. Anchor Texts: TBD

    6. Incorporation of cultural sustaining and/or critical pedagogy: Yes

  3. Flash Fiction Book

    1. Essential Question: How can students learn to use language Effectively, Economically, and Experimentally?

    2. Key Products: Students will create a book of flash fiction that they will write over the course of the project. They will be given a week for each story (different genres for each), edit them, and then make them into a book (and design the covers, inside photos, and write a bit about what they did and learned from the project). This project can take an interdisciplinary focus if working with a partner teacher

    3. Key Learning Goals: Students will know how to best use language to the ends and effects they want; be able to use language intentionally; know how to recognize when language is used effectively, economically, and experimentally

    4. Standards: not sure yet

    5. Anchor Texts: TBD

    6. Incorporation of cultural sustaining and/or critical pedagogy: Yes
